From the stone walls of Egyptian temples to the friezes of Greek ones, the makers of relief worked as a painter, sculptor or composer would, harmonizing form, emptiness and rhythm with the aim of beauty. As with art, the work needs to be perceived and interpreted by the body if it is going to move us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe modern addiction to sight blinds us to one of the most powerful forces in art: the void. In 1930s London, white reliefs set out a quiet order of shapes for people to look at and breathe, while Europe grew darker between two world wars. The end of the war is known in Germany as Stunde Null, zero hour. Twelve years later, two young German painters chose zero as the name of their group.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of them later wrote that their zero was not a negation but \"a zone of silence and of pure possibilities for a new beginning.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe empty realms between visible matter vibrate with possibility. Through them, light, air, sound and time flow uninterrupted. The space breathes. White is a new page, not a blank one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile we can't see voids, we can read their edges to map landscapes of tension or harmony. Rilievo's forms need intervals to define them, and the composition of negative spaces between them affects how they interrelate. These vignettes of nothingness can speak volumes: a cluster of forms with little space between them signifies abundance and intimacy, whereas a large, sparse living room can feel unwelcoming and alienating unless its voids are intentionally defined.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is why I designed Rilievo, a wall relief, for our collection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eManuela, architect and artist at The Soft Minimal\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach piece is made by hand, over 5 to 7 days of work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eSolid raised forms, 1 to 2 cm deep, joined by carved curving lines\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTrue shadow under the raised edges, moving as the daylight moves\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFine sand over blocks and ground alike\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eTwo colorways, one composition: Terra, plum brown, camel, terracotta and sand yellow over cream; Over my years of reading art history, I also learned what stood opposite them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1936, while those reliefs were still new, a museum in New York published a catalogue of abstract art, with a chart on its jacket mapping that art by date and by movement. Inside, on a single page, the book set out two opposite poles. At one stood those same white reliefs, all rectangles and circles; at the other, soft and curving forms, closer to a living cell than to a brick.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost of a home sits at the first pole: bookshelves, cabinets, a staircase, the long edge of a table. The body leans toward the second. We are drawn to organic shapes by instinct, and one curve, well placed, can soften a room of straight lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCurva comes from that second pole: a wall relief made of rounded forms and hollows, in ivory or a warm gray-beige. Ninety years after the catalogue, one of its sentences could have been written for Rilievo and Curva, in that order: \"The shape of the square confronts the silhouette of the
