Rilievo, the first wall relief in our collection, goes back to the white reliefs carved in London in the 1930s. Over my years of reading art history, I also learned what stood opposite them.

In 1936, while those reliefs were still new, a museum in New York published a catalogue of abstract art, with a chart on its jacket mapping that art by date and by movement. Inside, on a single page, the book set out two opposite poles. At one stood those same white reliefs, all rectangles and circles; at the other, soft and curving forms, closer to a living cell than to a brick.

Most of a home sits at the first pole: bookshelves, cabinets, a staircase, the long edge of a table. The body leans toward the second. We are drawn to organic shapes by instinct, and one curve, well placed, can soften a room of straight lines.

Curva comes from that second pole: a wall relief made of rounded forms and hollows, in ivory or a warm gray-beige. Ninety years after the catalogue, one of its sentences could have been written for Rilievo and Curva, in that order: "The shape of the square confronts the silhouette of the amoeba."

I. Built on Rhythm

How we experience a space is built on rhythm. Floors, walls and ceilings stay still, yet the way they are put together makes a room feel as if it flows. We move in time with the architecture around us. The human body is made to move, so we usually prefer spaces arranged in varied ways, which rouse senses and muscles alike into many different actions.

And when sunlight falls on Curva, our eyes feel wonderfully rested. The curves of a work of art like Curva can inspire the way we approach its own horizon. A piece with many rounded lines always draws the eye, and leaves our spirit softer and more relaxed. The works of The Soft Minimal always set off, without our noticing, a flow of energy that moves through us: while we look at one, our senses and our mind respond in a similar way. If a work of art is to give the body a frame it feels good in, the whole of it needs rhythm, from the way its forms are laid out to its surface. We did a lot of research to create a frame like that for the body, and Curva's layout, structure and surface have the rhythm to do it.

II. An Unseen Boundary

To design a work like Curva in keeping with The Soft Minimal's standard of putting people at the center, we have to take body image theory into account. It is our unconscious, always shifting sense of our own body in a space, and of a boundary we cannot see that lies just outside the soul. What a space or an object is like for us depends on how each of us senses our own body, a map we begin drawing very early in life.

This phenomenon cannot be measured, but it can be felt, and we can let it guide the delicate arrangement of forms. Arranging them is a balance of structure and material: how near or far each part sits, which way it faces, so that the psychological boundary around the body is respected. As the designers of these works, we need to listen to our own sense of the body, and to that of the person who will live with the work, so we can imagine comfortable proportions for a given room, or how a wall relief can give the soul the most support.

III. What Surrounds Us

The core reason for making Curva is to keep our fragile bodies safe and to be a support for our busy minds. So the walls that hold Curva become a continuation of our body and mood. When we shut our eyes to sense it, it feels as if we had drawn the curtains to keep the world out and come back to ourselves. This is because the body, by nature, tenses its muscles when danger comes near, and we turn the lock on the door to shore up the barrier that protects us from the outside.

But we take fresh air in through the nose and down to the lungs, the way an open window brings a room to life. And when stress gets the better of us, we clear away some of the clutter around us to restore order. To change who we are, we change what is around us. With that understood, a Curva on the wall can help us in every part of life: works like it must be reliable and useful, and yet they must also understand how we feel. Walls should keep quiet, and lend Curva an ear. When we understand that a space shapes us just as we shape it, that is when we can create delicate works, ones that bring safety, moments alone and the closeness of being together.

Orma

Lift a pebble out of wet sand and a round hollow stays behind. Orma has a hollow like that, on the left of a large ivory slab with rounded corners. A fine ridge runs down through it at a slant, and a curved band crosses the bottom.

Arco

In 1951, a painter crossing the Seine noticed the shadow of a bridge arch and its reflection on the water. Four years later, he turned them into a white relief in a pair of panels. Arco is built around one center line: an upright ivory band with a fine ridge along it, half circles and half ovals swelling out on both sides, and two soft branches where the band parts at the bottom.

Sasso

Three or four large slabs with rounded corners overlap in two or three layers, in a warm greige. A half circle is cut into the top edge, and a small arched hollow sits low on the left. An artist from the curving side of abstract art once said, "We want to produce like a plant that produces fruit and not reproduce." Sasso copies nothing. Its slabs settle one on another, the way layers of earth do.

IV. Into the Way We Think

Square & Curve, our new collection, is an invitation into the way we think, and we hope you find ideas worth bringing into your life, your home or your workplace. All the works gathered in this new collection are Manuela's projects, from her student days to today. Rather than sorting them by type, we chose to write from the ideas behind them and from the details of each work's design and materials, to give our design language a philosophical point of view.

The short essays in the chapters above set out the beliefs and aims behind The Soft Minimal, and we hope they stay useful long after you have read them. If you are especially curious, there is more to read: leave your email further down this page, and each new essay will reach you as it comes out.

Finally, our hope is that The Soft Minimal gives you works of art that offer moments of pleasure for the eye, the hand and the mind, moments you go back to as the years pass. What we share here comes with thanks to many minds and many highly skilled craftspeople, some celebrated, others overlooked, who have led the way for our work, and to everyone out there who shares the same aim. Much is still left to do before the places we build are felt again, and luckily, many others are at work on it too. We hope our work inspires you, and that you will trust us whenever you choose a piece, for many years to come.

Four names, one panel

Curva, Orma, Arco, Sasso

The bend of a road or of a river: in Italian, each is a curva. The three forms carry Italian names too, taken from their shapes rather than their colors. Orma is a trace, the mark left where something has been. Arco is an arch. Sasso is a stone.

Raised and hollow

On the flat panel, some forms stand forward and others sink below the surface. A rounded slab comes toward the room; a hollow falls back from it. Both share the same matte color and fine, even grain.

Questions

Start with the furniture below the wall. Wall art looks settled when it is about two thirds as wide. A console or dresser 105 to 120 cm wide (41 to 47 in) suits 70x100 or 80x120 cm. A bed or sofa 180 cm wide (71 in) or more suits 120x180 cm. The smaller sizes fit a narrow wall, a hallway or a spot between two doors.

Both are slim floating frames, and the relief arrives already set in yours. Black draws a crisp line around the ivory of Orma and Arco. Gold is warmer and sits easily with the greige of Sasso. During the launch, gold costs the same as black.

Plan on 7 to 14 business days from the day you order. The price already covers import duties and taxes, so nothing more is due at your door.

Arco is the calmest, nearly the same on both sides, so it sits well centered over a bed or a sofa. Orma is off-center, with its hollow to one side, and suits a reading corner or a wall next to a window. Sasso, the warmest and most layered, belongs in a dining room or an entry. Orma and Arco sit quietly on white or pale walls; Sasso fits rooms in beige, taupe or warm white.

When you unbox an art piece from

  • The art is life and the Soft Minimal makes us all better for it

Let’s start with the easiest-the product. Art and creation are highly personal, as is the receipt and impact by those pieces. I now have 3 from the Soft Minimal and each one strikes deep and strikes with emotion. I do not know how they capture the essence when creating, but it feels like each piece was made for me personally. Arriving at the perfect moment in time. …

  • Excellent experiece

I am please to let everyone know that I ordered and received AeroCherubs with a Red Balloon. It arrive with damage to the hand. I emailed The Soft Minimalist support and the service commitment was immediately recognized.

Asha and Manuela told me, I didn’t need to do anything, that a replacement order was being promptly shipped. They told me I didn’t need to send the damaged piece back or do anything on my end. They even offered to send me an additional piece, free of charge.

While it is unrealistic for everything to always go perfectly, when something does go wrong, it is all about the service recovery and Asha and Manuela could not have handled this any better.

I love the piece and as a “self proclaimed” service expert, I can say that customer service and customer satisfaction, I experienced with The Soft Minimal, was impressive.

  • Masterpiece

I received the piece, The Echo, a few weeks ago and I almost cried. It is the most unique, exquisitely crafted form of workmanship ever. If my friends ask me about it I tell them that I have renamed it “Burdened Down” because it represents the struggles of life to me. The size and weight of this piece were surprising as well. Kudos Soft Minimal for a one of a kind masterpiece. I’m searching for my next purchase from you.

  • Exemplary Product and Customer Support

I contacted the Softmnimal in May to find out if order was purchased how long it would take to receive. This order was being placed as a gift to a friend and I wanted it to arrive during a particular time frame. Asha was the individual who contacted me initially and followed through every step of the way to insure delivery during the time frame I expected. … I have never had any support from a business as I did with the Softminimal and Asha. … If ever I need a special item for anyone I will look to the Softminimal to see if they have an appropriate gift. I recommend this business with no hesitation.
