Since my first year at university, I have been reading art history. From the stone walls of Egyptian temples to the friezes of Greek ones, the makers of relief worked as a painter, sculptor or composer would, harmonizing form, emptiness and rhythm with the aim of beauty. As with art, the work needs to be perceived and interpreted by the body if it is going to move us.

The modern addiction to sight blinds us to one of the most powerful forces in art: the void. In 1930s London, white reliefs set out a quiet order of shapes for people to look at and breathe, while Europe grew darker between two world wars. The end of the war is known in Germany as Stunde Null, zero hour. Twelve years later, two young German painters chose zero as the name of their group.

One of them later wrote that their zero was not a negation but "a zone of silence and of pure possibilities for a new beginning."

The empty realms between visible matter vibrate with possibility. Through them, light, air, sound and time flow uninterrupted. The space breathes. White is a new page, not a blank one.

While we can't see voids, we can read their edges to map landscapes of tension or harmony. Rilievo's forms need intervals to define them, and the composition of negative spaces between them affects how they interrelate. These vignettes of nothingness can speak volumes: a cluster of forms with little space between them signifies abundance and intimacy, whereas a large, sparse living room can feel unwelcoming and alienating unless its voids are intentionally defined.

That is why I designed Rilievo, a wall relief, for our collection.

I. The Need for Calm

For a long time, people believed the mind mattered more than the body. The body was seen as a machine, the senses as servants. Science, art and design followed this thinking, and paid less and less attention to what the body feels. Modern technology pushed it further, until living without calm felt normal. Architecture and design slowly lost their human touch. They served function and reason, but forgot the very people who use them, and their need for calm in body and mind.

This is why my art has long grown from my own research: a search for forms that bring people back to inner calm. Its roots lie in relief art, and especially in one moment. In the mid-1930s, Europe was darkening between the two world wars. Economies were in crisis, fascism was rising, and London filled with painters who had fled the continent. In that city, white geometric reliefs began to appear. They gave people still, ordered surfaces where the eye could rest in a time of turmoil. In my eyes, angular forms like these speak of calm.

II. Geometry and Stillness

Many thinkers now agree that this numbness, the mind in charge and the body used to living without calm, has played a part in the sense of isolation, the inner emptiness and the illness so common in modern societies. This puts an urgent task in the hands of artists and designers: to help us feel calm in the world again. That is why Rilievo uses the relationship between geometry and stillness of mind as a bridge between the body and the mind. In the end, it nourishes the whole person.

Rilievo's bars, squares and a quarter circle, cut as solid blocks, rise from the flat ground of the panel. A grain as fine as sand scatters the light across them. Each raised edge gives the light a place to rest. There, light meets matter.

III. This Room, This Hour

While designing Rilievo, my first piece of wall art for The Soft Minimal, I studied how it could grow inseparable from the senses of whoever lives beside it, and from the simple experience of being alive. It had to bring its owner, and anyone who pauses before it, back into themselves: here, in this room, in this hour, among the things that are special to them. For that, the senses have to work as one. In front of a relief, the eyes lead, the hand follows, and then the whole body joins in, turning countless small signals into one instant reading of the room and a response to it.

When Rilievo becomes yours, the first thing I want it to do is receive the whole mood of the place you live in, with its light and its shadow. You can feel the light move, hour by hour, over the soft, sand-like grain of the panel. And the shadows are the part I love most. They gather softly beneath the raised edges and stretch out as evening comes. The room seems to slow down with them.

Terra

Terra is the earth-toned version. Its cream background holds a plum-brown bar, a camel square, a thick terracotta quarter circle and a thin sand-yellow strip. The colors are muted and matte. They warm a pale wall without any loud color.

Chalk

Chalk is the same composition in one ivory white. It recalls the white reliefs of the last century. Here the quarter circle is almost flat. Its shape shows only through a carved line and the shadow it casts. One color lets the eye notice each small change in the light. The panel changes with the daylight. In slanting morning sun the shapes look crisp. On a cloudy afternoon they turn soft and faint.

IV. A Feeling of Home

The craftspeople who make Rilievo with me need the same understanding I do: how the senses join forces to study each form, its outline, its surface, its weight and how it takes the light. They also need a full knowledge of relief, an ancient craft, built from what the senses gather, first in the body and only later in the mind. Rilievo's blocks and lines lean on one another, and together they call on several senses at once: the present meets a memory, a still form meets movement, a texture meets a feeling.

I believe the skill to feel this has been with us since birth, and that in time it teaches us where our inner world ends and the world outside begins. Rilievo helps you notice the quiet pleasure of a body at ease with some materials and some rooms, and the unease that other places can stir. Over a lifetime, these meetings between body and place settle into memory, and from them each of us builds a feeling of comfort, of safety, of home.

Rilievo: anatomy of a name

Rilievo

Rilievo is the Italian word for relief: work that rises from a flat ground. The form sits between painting and sculpture, and so does this panel. It hangs on the wall like a painting and carries depth like sculpture: solid blocks you can rest a fingertip against, and real shadows beneath them.

Schiacciato

Renaissance sculptors kept a name for relief carved deliberately flat: schiacciato, a panel only a few centimeters deep that could still open a whole landscape. The lesson is that depth does not need thickness. Rilievo inherits it: the blocks rise barely two centimeters, and in daylight that is enough.

Care and FAQ

A dry, soft cloth is all it needs. Dust the blocks and the frame now and then, and keep the panel away from damp air and harsh direct sun. No sprays, no cleaning products.

Terra and Chalk share one composition. Terra carries plum brown, camel, terracotta and sand yellow blocks on a cream ground, muted and matte. Chalk is one ivory white from edge to edge, so the shapes show only by the shadows they cast. Terra warms the wall; Chalk is the quieter of the two.

Art over furniture sits best at about two thirds the width of what stands beneath it. The three smaller sizes, 50x70 to 70x100 cm, suit a console or the wall above a nightstand. From 80x120 cm up, Rilievo can hold a wide wall on its own.

Yes. The blocks are solid and raised, so daylight gives every shape a real shadow, and as the sun moves, the shadows move with it. The panel you pass at breakfast is not quite the one you pass at dusk.

Your panel is delivered within 7 to 14 business days of your order.

  • The art is life and the Soft Minimal makes us all better for it

Let’s start with the easiest-the product. Art and creation are highly personal, as is the receipt and impact by those pieces. I now have 3 from the Soft Minimal and each one strikes deep and strikes with emotion. I do not know how they capture the essence when creating, but it feels like each piece was made for me personally. Arriving at the perfect moment in time. …

  • Excellent experiece

I am please to let everyone know that I ordered and received AeroCherubs with a Red Balloon. It arrive with damage to the hand. I emailed The Soft Minimalist support and the service commitment was immediately recognized.

Asha and Manuela told me, I didn’t need to do anything, that a replacement order was being promptly shipped. They told me I didn’t need to send the damaged piece back or do anything on my end. They even offered to send me an additional piece, free of charge.

While it is unrealistic for everything to always go perfectly, when something does go wrong, it is all about the service recovery and Asha and Manuela could not have handled this any better.

I love the piece and as a “self proclaimed” service expert, I can say that customer service and customer satisfaction, I experienced with The Soft Minimal, was impressive.

  • Masterpiece

I received the piece, The Echo, a few weeks ago and I almost cried. It is the most unique, exquisitely crafted form of workmanship ever. If my friends ask me about it I tell them that I have renamed it “Burdened Down” because it represents the struggles of life to me. The size and weight of this piece were surprising as well. Kudos Soft Minimal for a one of a kind masterpiece. I’m searching for my next purchase from you.

  • Exemplary Product and Customer Support

I contacted the Softmnimal in May to find out if order was purchased how long it would take to receive. This order was being placed as a gift to a friend and I wanted it to arrive during a particular time frame. Asha was the individual who contacted me initially and followed through every step of the way to insure delivery during the time frame I expected. … I have never had any support from a business as I did with the Softminimal and Asha. … If ever I need a special item for anyone I will look to the Softminimal to see if they have an appropriate gift. I recommend this business with no hesitation.
