The spectrum with the most widespread resonance is the one painted by nature. Regardless of name or culture, we have evolved universal neurological preferences for those hues that have consistently represented safety and sustenance: the poetic light waves reflected by a lake or a blue sky, the attractive green of edible plants and the rich brown of life-giving earth. Tinta, a wall relief of soft curves, takes its three colors from them: olive, sage and clay. Transferring this serene palette to the walls of a home can affect a similar sensation of calm.

By avoiding the use of vivid hues in design, which in nature often demand attention and action, we avoid overstimulating the mind and instead can maintain the repose that is a tenet of well-being.

Tinta draws its inspiration from the 1936 New York catalogue I read in my final year at university, the book that set the square against the curve. In it, I read that one artist's early reliefs were built in layers and "brightly painted"; his later ones, "of extreme simplicity."

With Tinta, for the first time in our collection, one deep color covers the whole panel, in the soft tones of leaf and earth.

Manuela, architect and artist at The Soft Minimal

Each piece is made by hand, over 5 to 7 days of work.

  • Soft, rounded forms rise from the panel and hollows sink into it, all in one matte color with a fine sand finish
  • Three colors, one to each panel: Oliva, a grayed olive green; Salvia, a gray sage green; Argilla, a smoky clay brown
  • Seven framed sizes, width x height: 50 x 70 cm (19.7 x 27.6 in), 60 x 80 cm (23.6 x 31.5 in), 70 x 100 cm (27.6 x 39.4 in), 80 x 120 cm (31.5 x 47.2 in), 90 x 130 cm (35.4 x 51.2 in), 100 x 150 cm (39.4 x 59.1 in) and 120 x 180 cm (47.2 x 70.9 in)
  • Black or gold floating frame, slim, already fitted when it arrives
  • Care: dust lightly with a dry, soft duster; keep it away from water, sprays and strong direct sun

After 5 to 7 days of handwork, allow 10 to 17 business days for delivery, which varies by size. Tinta travels in its frame, each corner protected.

I. The Medium of Color

Beginning at birth, an organism gifted with sight learns the language of color to interpret the environment. Color provides clues to decipher if a thing is hot or cold, safe or dangerous, edible or toxic. Over time, what is initially a biological interpretation of color for survival becomes layered with complex emotional and cultural associations and personal narratives. The world becomes literally saturated with meaning.

Hence, the color of Tinta is such a direct and deep-seated medium, with all its physiological effects, signifiers of culture and of a home's identity, and innately alluring beauty. It is a powerful work of art, to be wielded with sensitivity.

II. A Mental Phenomenon

Using Tinta well also depends on where it is applied and for whom: each of its palettes, Oliva, Salvia and Argilla, possesses the potential to soothe or irritate, uplift or depress, please or repel. Ultimately, the color of each Tinta variant determines our response to it. Yet if we'd like works of art to suit a home or to touch our minds, we too must use the potent and instant medium of color.

Through a human-centric lens, color's primary role in the design of Tinta is to evoke meaning, encourage the well-being that its two greens and its earth tone bring, and, with wood as its material, extend the life of the work itself. When we had our first design ideas for Tinta, we necessarily started from a primal physiological argument: to understand color perception and to work with instinctive reactions to certain hues, tones and chromas, which are definitions of beauty refined through human evolution.

From here, our aim is to create a work of art whose palette viewers and buyers alike find satisfying on the deepest, often subconscious level. That palette must fit its context, serve its function and possess a quiet beauty that transcends trends and will not fade with time. In our search for these qualities, we find ourselves drawn to earthly colors and to sage and olive green: to the softness of sand, depths of cloudy skies, richness of clay and warmth of wood. I thank nature for giving me an abundant palette to enrich this work of art.

III. A Deceptively Minimal Palette

Through a restrained selection of three colors, we also invite the eye to discover the subtle nuances of each hue, sharpening an appreciation of a deceptively "minimal" palette. Over time, the eyes become familiar with the character transitions of a certain shade of sage compared to its moodier olive sibling, adeptly perceiving minute differences. Warmer tones often invite feelings of happiness, optimism and energy, while cooler tones typically soothe and relax us. Monotonal or monochromatic reliefs are especially good at instilling peace. They're not only effortless on the eyes, but they mimic a natural ocular process that regulates the gradual variation in color from morning to evening: a mental construction of order and simplicity.

Each Tinta panel is one color, edge to edge, and Argilla, the clay, is the warm one of the three.

Oliva

Olive green, softened toward gray. A large half-moon runs down the left edge like a leaf; beside it, an upright panel hangs from the top and ends in a rounded base, with vertical seams below.

Salvia

Sage, a green so soft it is nearly gray. A bowl-shaped hollow sits top left; a raised half-disc rests on a level ledge like the sun on the horizon, above a large disc and a long, hill-like arc.

Argilla

Clay brown, slightly smoky. Rounded slabs overlap on a diagonal, a large arc follows the right edge like an arched doorway, and a small rounded square holds to the left edge.

IV. Like a Bird's Nest

Beyond working with innate physiological responses to color, we must carefully handle the murky realms of color meaning and memory. Throughout our lives, colors are infused with stories that affect our preferences for or against them. From this mindset, we find ourselves returning to primal neutral colors, originating in nature, which have marinated in meaning for millennia and are thus more universal and timeless. While the preferred palette is restrained to soft beige, brown and gray, each context inspires a different hue selection and combination, certain tones and levels of vibrancy that resonate with that place.

For Tinta, the selection is the green of olive and sage and the brown of clay. Much like a bird's nest, we aim to design wall reliefs that integrate with their surroundings. A beguiling camouflage with just the right amount of character.

Named for color

Tinta, Oliva, Salvia, Argilla

Tinta is Italian for color, or tint, and a tinta unita means a single, solid color, the way each panel is finished. Each color takes its Italian name from a plant or from the earth: Oliva is the olive, Salvia is sage, Argilla is clay.

Light inside the color

The color is matte and close to gray, and the surface is fine sand. Where shadow falls, it shows as a deeper tone of the same color, so the curves stay soft.

Questions

Salvia, the lightest and grayest, is the quietest on pale walls. Oliva brings more depth to a white or cream wall. Argilla, the warm clay, suits rooms of beige, terracotta or warm white.

Aim for a width near two thirds of the furniture below. A 135 cm (53 in) sideboard takes 90x130 cm; a 150 cm (59 in) sofa takes 100x150 cm. On a narrow wall or in an entry, 50x70 or 60x80 cm is enough.

Gold picks up the warmth in Oliva and Argilla. Black draws a firm, quiet edge and sits well with the gray of Salvia. Either one comes fitted to the panel.

We first make your piece by hand, which takes 5 to 7 days. It then reaches you in 10 to 17 business days, depending on which size you choose.

Write to contact@thesoftminimal.com within 48 hours of delivery, and we will replace it. If you simply change your mind, the Easy Returns tab above explains how.

  • The art is life and the Soft Minimal makes us all better for it

Let’s start with the easiest-the product. Art and creation are highly personal, as is the receipt and impact by those pieces. I now have 3 from the Soft Minimal and each one strikes deep and strikes with emotion. I do not know how they capture the essence when creating, but it feels like each piece was made for me personally. Arriving at the perfect moment in time. …

  • Excellent experiece

I am please to let everyone know that I ordered and received AeroCherubs with a Red Balloon. It arrive with damage to the hand. I emailed The Soft Minimalist support and the service commitment was immediately recognized.

Asha and Manuela told me, I didn’t need to do anything, that a replacement order was being promptly shipped. They told me I didn’t need to send the damaged piece back or do anything on my end. They even offered to send me an additional piece, free of charge.

While it is unrealistic for everything to always go perfectly, when something does go wrong, it is all about the service recovery and Asha and Manuela could not have handled this any better.

I love the piece and as a “self proclaimed” service expert, I can say that customer service and customer satisfaction, I experienced with The Soft Minimal, was impressive.

  • Masterpiece

I received the piece, The Echo, a few weeks ago and I almost cried. It is the most unique, exquisitely crafted form of workmanship ever. If my friends ask me about it I tell them that I have renamed it “Burdened Down” because it represents the struggles of life to me. The size and weight of this piece were surprising as well. Kudos Soft Minimal for a one of a kind masterpiece. I’m searching for my next purchase from you.

  • Exemplary Product and Customer Support

I contacted the Softmnimal in May to find out if order was purchased how long it would take to receive. This order was being placed as a gift to a friend and I wanted it to arrive during a particular time frame. Asha was the individual who contacted me initially and followed through every step of the way to insure delivery during the time frame I expected. … I have never had any support from a business as I did with the Softminimal and Asha. … If ever I need a special item for anyone I will look to the Softminimal to see if they have an appropriate gift. I recommend this business with no hesitation.
